Vikings Ending After Six Seasons on History

It’s the end of the line for History’s Vikings.

Deadline is reporting that the hit drama series will conclude with its previously announced sixth season.

But there’s a twist:

A spinoff series is in the works at the cabler, and it will reportedly “continue the Vikings saga.”

Aside from that, details are scarce about the potential sequel series.

Vikings has been a success story for History since it debuted in 2013 as the network’s first original scripted series.

Vikings Season 5 is currently averaging 2 million total viewers and a 0.5 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic.

While these figures represent declines of almost 30 percent in the demo, it remains as the highest-rated scripted series on the network.

The sixth and now final season was ordered in September 2017, and it accompanied the news that the show’s leading lady, Katheryn Winnick, will be stepping behind the camera to direct an episode.

“It has been my pleasure and my privilege to work with History and our partner MGM over five seasons and 69 episodes of Vikings,” series creator Michael Hirst said in a statement at the time of the renewal.

“Now we are ready to begin production of a 20-episode Season 6 that will deliver a huge and unexpected revelation to our audience.”

History programming EVP Eli Lehrer said at the time, “Vikings has evolved from early raids in England, to the heart-stopping death of Ragnar Lothbrok, to the fierce battles of the Great Heathen Army, and now we’ll see the sons of Ragnar exploring and conquering the known world. Michael Hirst has only scratched the surface of his epic saga.”
