You Definitely Won’t Relax After Watching the Black Mirror: Bandersnatch Trailer

Breaking News

Netflix has finally released a trailer for its new Black Mirror movie “Bandersnatch,” and although the theme song running behind all the action might instruct us to “Relax,” that’s just not a possibility. At all.

The official logline for “Bandersnatch” puts it all pretty mildly:

“In 1984, a young programmer begins to question reality as he adapts a sprawling fantasy novel into a video game and soon faces a mind-mangling challenge. Welcome back.”

In the trailer, things start out simple enough for our video game nerd Stefan (Fionn Whitehead) even though we know it won’t stay that way. “We’re going to be a hit factory. Like Motown for computer games. You heard it here first,” says his new boss (Asim Chaudhry) before introducing him to the project.

But then his new colleague-slash-drug man (Will Poulter) starts pushing yellow-and-red capsules on him to help with all those deep dives into the head space of genius author Jerome F. Davies, who “went cuckoo and cut his wife’s head off…” and, well, this is obviously more than some simple tech development drama.

“When it’s a concept piece, a bit of madness is what you need,” his new friend insists in a statement that can also describe a running theme behind all the scattered pieces of Black Mirror.

Pretty soon he’s reaching through mirrors, seeing the white bear symbol spattered in blood on a VHS tape, and watching as little spindly gremlin hands coming around corners.

So far, it looks a little like “Playtest” meets “White Bear” meets “Hang the DJ,” but, of course, we have no idea what the heck is actually going on in this movie. As another VHS playing in the preview tells us, “You’re not in control.” Wiser words, no?

“Bandersnatch” was directed by David Slade, who slipped in a rather obvious nod to his previous Black Mirror segment “Metalhead.”
